She founded ''Women in the Arts-St. Louis'' to highlight women's work and gain more performances for musicians and composers. She earned her doctorate in composition from the Eastman School of Music.〔 She also studied at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt, Germany with Helmut Walcha. She has said her work with him was difficult as he "did not believe that women belonged on the organ bench".〔(Cynthia Green Libby, "From Bach to Vivace Press: The Metamorphosis of Barbara Harbach" ), ''International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM) Journal'' (2006) (accessed 13 March 2007)〕
